Tucked into a quiet St. Pete neighborhood is a small wooden box that’s helping feed hundreds of pets in our community. It’s called Hank’s Bark Box, and while it may look simple, the impact it’s having is anything but.
Located at 6511 3rd Avenue South, Hank’s Bark Box is a free roadside pet food pantry stocked with dry and canned food for dogs and cats. It’s open 24 hours a day and operates on a simple idea: take what you need, leave what you can. There are no forms to fill out and no questions asked, just neighbors helping neighbors.
The pantry was started in 2021 by St. Pete resident Mark James in memory of his beloved dog, Hank. After Hank passed away from cancer, James wanted to honor him in a way that would help both pets and their owners. Using his woodworking skills, he built the small roadside pantry and filled it with pet food. By the next day, it was empty, a clear sign of how much the community needed it.
Since then, the box has become a quiet lifeline for many families facing tough times. The goal is simple: help people keep their pets at home instead of being forced to surrender them due to financial hardship.
What makes Hank’s Bark Box special is that it runs entirely on community support. Donations from local residents, businesses, and even people outside the area help keep the pantry stocked. Volunteers and supporters regularly drop off food, and the box is refilled multiple times a day when needed.
In just a few years, tens of thousands of pounds of pet food have passed through that small wooden box, helping dogs and cats all over the city.

It’s a simple concept, but it speaks to something bigger about St. Pete: when the community sees a need, people show up. And thanks to Hank’s Bark Box, a lot of pets are getting a full bowl—and staying right where they belong, at home with the people who love them.
